Questions
1) How have you defined repentance in the past? What do you think of this idea of repentance as an embrace?
2) We Christians have different conceptions of God's personality, just as believers have had for thousands of years. In the OT, prophets are always trembling lest they die because they saw or spoke with God, and yet we see language of God walking with Abraham, Moses speaking with God, and David's Psalms often evoke the language of intimate friendship. That's even before we get to the image of the prodigal son and John resting back on Jesus' bosom. How does your conception of God's personality affect the way you understand repentance?
3) In the sermon I asserted that when we turn and embrace God in repentance, believers are drawn closer to one another. How do you feel about this? Can you think of instances that have affirmed this for you? Can you think of instances that challenge this notion? What are some of your thoughts after reflecting on this?
4) Here are two questions you can treasure in your heart and don't have to share with your group unless you feel specifically called to. 1. When was the last time you remember turning back to God? 2. Is there an area of your life right now where the Holy Spirit is calling, "Return to me, and I will return to you?" If so, you're not alone. There certainly is one such area for me (Jolene).
