These questions are meant to help us to struggle with a few things together. There are no wrong answers, and there will hopefully a diversity of answers in your group! Since this is in response to a Thanksgiving service, I suggest you say, “Thanks for sharing” or something similar to each person in your group once during the conversation.

1. “Heresy” is a term with a lot of history (and emotional history) behind it. What is your personal definition?
2. Did a neighbour of yours in the group have a definition that you particularly liked?
3. “God is love” is on bumper stickers and signs around the world. What is your initial reaction when you hear, “God is love”?
a. What does the phrase mean to you personally?
4. We heard of the particular type of love that John is calling the early church to What is similar or different about how we are called to love one another at Mountainview today?
5. There were some specific heresies that were distracting the church from loving one another well in 1 John. What might distract us from loving well today?
6. Does one of the specific “love one another” verses call out to you? In what way?
7. 1 John 5:16 states, “If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.” How do we pray “That God will give them life” with regards to our brothers and sisters in Christ?
