MOUNTAINVIEW NEWS

Join us Sunday morning at 10 am or any time throughout the week. This Sunday Pastoral intern Jolene Veenstra will present a message entitled “The Pauline Epistle Sandwich”. She will be looking at the book of Philippians.

Mountainview has several things in common with the first century church, though thankfully we don't face some of their challenges! As a traveling evangelist, Paul's only tools in building community with his growing church were the power of the Holy Spirit, a few letters, and a few visits. He made use of these tools in unique ways that we as a church can benefit from reflecting on.

LET’S BUILD SOME COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS!

A heads up from the FACILITIES MANAGEMENT TEAM - Most of you are aware that we are building a new hospital here in Grimsby for West Niagara. The new hospital is being built around the old one. Once completed the old building will be torn down and that will become parking space. However, during construction parking at the hospital is extremely limited. FMT is in conversation with Ellis Don (the contactor constructing the new hospital) about using Mountainview’s parking lot for the many contractors working on the project.

This is a ‘win-win’ for all of us, as we can support the new build, they get accessible parking and the rental fees will go into a fund for the re-paving of our parking lot in 4-5 years. (An estimated expense in our 5-year plan of approx. $400,000.00) There are still a number of details to be worked out, but we wanted to give you a heads-up about the use of our parking spaces and the shuttle bus. There will probably be some inconveniences caused by this arrangement, we are doing our best to minimize these. If you have any concerns please feel free to speak with FMT Chair Rob Heersink or Board Chair, PJ Vermeer.

LOCAL DENOMINATIONAL NEWS

Groundwork: Understand: Jesus on the Road - On the road to Emmaus, two of Jesus’ followers listened as their companion explained the Scriptures to them. As their understanding of Scripture grew, so did their faith. Join Groundwork as we study this story in Luke 24:13-35 and discuss how we too cultivate our faith yet today as we develop a greater understanding of God and his ways through Scripture. Listen now at Groundworkonline.com and subscribe to Groundwork's weekly emails for future episodes.

Kids Corner: Crying Out to God - Check out this week’s kids’ devotion at kidscorner.net. God cares when bad things happen. He invites us to turn to him just like David did with honesty and trust. He will hear our laments.  Check out all the great content at kidscorner.net like the Bible story podcast “Saul Chases David.”

"Confessional Status"?: A Church Polity Discussion  On May 4, 7:30 PM, Meadowlands Fellowship CRC in Ancaster will be hosting Emeritus Professor of Church Polity, Dr. Henry DeMoor who will be addressing the recent synodical decision regarding confessional status and its relation to same-sex marriage in the church.  Introductory remarks will be as brief as possible so that we have more time for Q&A. These remarks will try to place issues we are dealing with regarding same-sex marriage in a broader perspective – first, with respect to the unity of the church of Christ and, second, with respect to the history of these issues in the history of the CRC in North America. The latter will include an update on happenings in Classis GR East. After that, the speaker will focus on how the Synod of 2022 dealt with the report of its Study Committee (HSR) and what’s now “new” in our circles. This is not just a discussion of “unchastity” but also the church political consequences of giving synod’s interpretation of that word “confessional status.” We will then discuss how and where these decisions are currently relevant, where they raise concerns, and then, hopefully, the Q&A session will address and clarify our further concerns.  This event will be livestreamed at meadowlandsfellowship.com.
