Scripture Passage: Luke 24:13-35

Slide 1

See the Story
"How do I get people to see?"

Slide 2

If only I can answer all the questions...
If only I explain it right...

Slide 3

The situation
13 ... two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, .... 14 They were talking with each other ... 15 ...Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;

Slide 4

The set up
16 ... they were kept from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

Slide 5

The shock and dismay
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 ... “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

Slide 6

Classic Jesus
  19 “What things?” he asked.

Slide 7

Perfect recitation of the story
Jesus ... powerful in word and deed ...chief priests ... they crucified him... but we had hoped ... the third day ...went to the tomb ... didn’t find his body... alive....but they did not see Jesus.

Slide 8

Shock and dismay
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Slide 9

Probably perfect recitation...
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Slide 10

Always hospitality
29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

Slide 11

The hosted one hosts
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

Slide 12

Now you see me, now you don't
31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

Slide 13

Looking and going back
32 ... “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us ...?”
33 They ...returned at once to Jerusalem... found the Eleven ..., assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true!

Slide 14

Why in the breaking of the bread?
35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
