Is Genesis 11 about language, building or scattering?

Slide 5

Tongues, one lip, a few words
10:31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages,…
11:1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech

Slide 6

They said, then they said
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” ... 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ... a city, ... a tower ... to the heavens, ... make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered ....”

Slide 7

Fear/blessing of being scattered
4 ...otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth...
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, ...stopped building .... 9 ... the Lord confused the language .... From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Big #1 Other gods
made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Slide 15

Big #2 worship through idols
he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 ... sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Slide 16

Do we ever get impatient with our community leaders?
Is there a temptation for us to trust in things we can see/handle?
Are there ways we worship that can be more important to us than who we worship?

Slide 17

Focus: what does it look like for us to trust God's plan for our community instead of rushing into what works best for us?
