Slide 1

Lent: Communion
Themes and Styles

Slide 2

One Body: of Christ and in Christ

Slide 3

A straightforward analogy
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

Slide 4

1. Spiritual Unity
a. initiated in baptism
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body

Slide 5

1. Spiritual Unity
b. a radical washing
—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—

Slide 6

1. Spiritual Unity
c. internal and overflowing
and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Slide 7

Refrain
14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Slide 8

2. Diversity with Unity
a. Difference doesn't exclude
16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.

Slide 9

2. Diversity with Unity
b. Equal, though different
17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?

Slide 10

2. Diversity with Unity
c. planned placement
18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

Slide 11

Refrain
20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

Slide 12

3. Interdependence
a. Functional connections
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”

Slide 13

3. Interdependence
b. kingdom values
22  those parts of the body that seem to be weaker ... less honorable ... unpresentable

Slide 14

3. Interdependence
c. shared experience
26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

Slide 15

Refrain
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
Please refrain from denying the refrain.
